Ewan McGregor raised eyebrows at the Golden Globes on Sunday when he thanked both his ex-wife and the woman he left her for in his acceptance speech.
The Scottish actor then appeared to go public with his new relationship just days later as he kissed Fargo co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead before collecting his Critics’ Choice Award.
McGregor won his first ever Globe when he took home best actor in a limited series for his role in Fargo.
Accepting his award on stage, the 46-year-old paid tribute to estranged wife Eve Mavrakis and his children.
He said: “I want to thank Ev, who stood by me for 22 years.”
He said: “I want to take a moment to just say thank you to Eve, who always stood by me for 22 years, and my four children Clara, Esther, Jamyan and Anouk.”
The Star Wars actor then left viewers gobsmacked as he went on to mention Mary Elizabeth Winstead, his Fargo co-star who he left his wife for last year.
He continued: “And I’ve always loved being an actor and I love hanging out with actors and I got amazing actors to work with on this.
“There wouldn’t have been Emmit Stussy without David Thewlis and Michael Stuhlbarg and Carrie Coon and there wouldn’t have been a Ray without Mary Elizabeth Winstead.”
Fans took to Twitter in shock and amusement at the awkward and uncomfortable speech.
Estranged wife Eve, 51, saw the speech and was so hurt by it that she finally broke her silence following the couple’s marriage breakdown.
Approached by the Daily Mail at the former marital home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, she said: “No, I did not like his speech.”
Asked why, she replied: “For the same reasons you are here asking me about it. I am not going to say any more.”
Last week, it seemed like production designer Eve was wasting no time in moving on in her life without him.
The French native wed Ewan in 1995 but their marriage fell apart in 2017.
Fans – and Eve herself – were shocked when he suddenly split from her and embarked on a romance with 33-year-old Winstead.
Taking to Instagram on New Year’s Day, Eve appeared to declare that Ewan was officially no longer part of her life as she posed in a family photo that didn’t include him.
‘This will be out Christmas/New Year card,” she wrote as she posed in crystal blue waters off the coast of an exotic island surrounded by her daughters Anouk, Clara, Esther, and Jamyan.
“Happy 2018! I am so thankful for my loving, caring girls,” Eve continued.
“Happy, peaceful and adventurous New 2018 to all my friends and family. With love….” she added.
Eldest daughter Clara, 21, had posted the image originally and paid tribute to her mother – hinting she too considered her family to no longer include Ewan.
The Scottish actress wrote: “my lil family of women thank you @evemcgregor123 we owe it all to you.”
