Ex-South Carolina cop sentenced to 20 years in prison for black motorist's death

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters) – A white former South Carolina policeman caught on video shooting an unarmed black man in the back was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Thursday in a federal civil rights case connected to the 2015 killing.

Walter Scott shooting witness Feidin Santana (C), who took the video of the shooting, arrives at the Charleston federal court house on the 4th day of testimony during the sentencing hearing for former North Charleston police officer Michael Slager in Charleston, South Carolina, U.S., December 7, 2017. Michael Slager, 36, pleaded guilty in May to using excessive force when he killed 50-year-old Walter Scott after a traffic stop in North Charleston. A bystander’s cellphone video of the shooting drew national attention to the case.
