A new year means a new oil to become familiar with. We’re now taking a close look at castor oil. “Castor oil is a triglyceride fatty acid from the beans of the castor bean plant,” says holistic doctor and author of The Well Path Jamé Heskett. “It’s a unique TGFA called ricinoleic acid, which is fairly rare in the plant kingdom.”
Heskett explains that it’s easy to get and you can find castor oil at your local pharmacy, natural food store, and online. But most importantly, it is loaded with a bunch of skin benefits and we should 100% incorporate it into our daily routines. We wanted to get to the specifics and asked her to share a list of why castor oil is so good for your skin. Scroll down to see what she says.
According to her, the skin benefits of castor oil include the following:
- Improves circulation.
- Stimulates the lymphatic system.
- Works to kill fungi, inflammation, and dermatitis.
- Heals acne and injuries by reducing the bacteria and healing wounds.
- Reduce cellulite.
- Acts as a powerful emollient.
As for how to use it, she says that many products have castor oil as one of the main ingredients, but you can definitely use it on its own. “It is not expensive and so you can use it liberally all over without wasting your other products,” she says.
How does she like to use it? “My favorite is to use it after I get a pedicure just to be sure that any fungi or other stuff from the nail salon doesn’t set up shop on my feet. I keep some in my gym bag to use after showering for the same reason,” she says. “I [also] put some on my tush overnight, and let me tell you, it makes your skin feel just like a baby’s.”
