Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has tipped Michael Carrick to become his assistant one day but says he won’t appoint an immediate successor to Rui Faria.

The Red Devils announced on Saturday that Faria was set to leave the club after working alongside Mourinho for the last 17 years.

Mourinho described Faria as a ‘brother’ during his press conference after a 1-0 win against Watford and said he would sorely miss his friend as he took time out from football.

Carrick played his last game for the club in the win against the Hornets and is set to take up a role in Mourinho’s backroom staff.

There had been speculation that Mourinho would appoint a new assistant but he says the role could go to Carrick once he obtains all his coaches’ badges.

‘I will organise my staff in a system where an assistant manager doesn’t exist,’ said Mourinho.

‘I will have specific coaches, analysts and no assistant manager. I think it will be Michael Carrick in the future when he has his badges.’

Faria said he would take a short break from football before searching for a managerial role.

Mourinho hopes to face Faria in the future and said he would be ‘proud’ to see him taking charge at a Premier League club.

‘Maybe one day we are playing one against each other in the Premier League,’ said Mourinho.

‘If that moment arrives I’d be a proud guy, this man came to me as a kid 17 years ago, if that happens i’d be a proud guy.’
