Manchester United are ready to hand Ander Herrera a new deal – but could trigger a 12-month extension should a deal not be reached soon.
That is according to the Telegraph, who say, while there is a will from both sides to thrash out fresh terms, United had hoped to have tied up a deal by now.
Herrera’s current contract expires next summer and he would be free to talk to foreign clubs in January if he does not extend his stay.
United are also keen on extending Marouane Fellaini’s contract.
Ozil tells Arsenal teammates he will sign for United
Ozil, 29 , is ready to make the bombshell switch, and is confident that he will move to Old Trafford.
The Germany midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and can leave for nothing then, but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger admitted publicly last week that they could end up selling him in January.
That has now opened the door to the possibility of Ozil defecting to one of their biggest rivals.
De Bruyne: Title race is Manchester shootout
Kevin De Bruyne reckons the title race is likely to come down to a straight fight between Manchester’s rival clubs.
Pep Guardiola’s City, inspired by De Bruyne’s brilliance this season, currently lead Jose Mourinho’s United by two points at the top of the Premier League.
Although third-placed Tottenham remain within touching distance, five points adrift of City, De Bruyne admitted it is already looking like City versus United for the title.
“For the moment I think so, but everybody’s still there,” said De Bruyne.
“It’s so early. If you lose two or three games you go back to a [lower] position. We have to maintain this hopefully.”
