Paul Pierce emotionally reflects on sacrifices he made to become an NBA champion

The day before the Celtics retire his jersey, Paul Pierce spoke to reporters about how emotional this moment is for him before going to a dinner that honored him. Pierce dug deep and gave an honest, thoughtful response.

Hearing Pierce talk about the sacrifices he made to become an NBA champion and a Celtics great is sad in a way, but it’s also a prefect look into what it takes. After listening/reading it, you’ll have a better understanding of why he reacted to the thought of sharing his night with Isaiah Thomas in the way that he did.

Here’s what Pierce had to say via the video below from MassLive:

“It’s gonna be emotional. I know it is. People don’t understand. People see the finished product. People see what I was able to put out there. People don’t actually see the behind-the-scenes journey and people who influenced that, and they’re all gonna be there. They’re all here tonight, and I know it’s gonna be emotional.”

He continued:

“You sacrifice so much of your time in this league. I go home every summer, you got people you lose to death, people age, you miss birthdays, you miss so much because of the dedication I put to this sport all for me myself to be a winner. You miss out on so many things. I think that’s the reason I cry so much because of the sacrifices I was able to make, give to the game of basketball.

“People don’t understand you lose out on so many other aspects of life. Missing my kids’ first time learning how to walk, first time saying their first words, you miss so much of just life in general, but that’s what I put into the game, that’s what I was able to sacrifice. It’s tough. It’s tough, people don’t know that. You just miss out on life, just for one thing. It’s just incredible, just for one thing, to be one of the best. You don’t realize it until right now I look back on it like, ‘Man, you did all this for one thing. You cared so much.

“That’s who I was. I cared so much. I wanted to raise a banner, I wanted to be a champion. I don’t know if it’s all worth it in the end, but it surely feels like it is worth it.”

In a tribute video on Twitter, former Celtic Kevin Garnett backs up what Pierce said.

“Let me correct ya’ll with something,” Garnett says. “You heard me more. I was the vocal leader, but the real leader, the heart leader of this whole thing, No. 34.”

Pierce poured his heart into the game of basketball and missed out on big life moments with his family, but now they’re by his side in Boston looking back on his career with him.
