Manchester City star Leroy Sane almost moved to Allianz Arena as part of a lucrative swap deal with Bayern Munich defender David Alaba, according to reports from Germany.

24-year-old Sane has not featured for the first team since last summer’s Community Shield triumph over Liverpool, during which he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

He was close to returning to fitness before the coronavirus outbreak caused match postponements, making one appearance for the U23 side in Premier League 2 last month.

However, the German’s lack of football this season has done little to put off the Bundesliga champions in their pursuit, and David Alaba was part of the offer as Bayern tried to get the deal over the line.

Alaba’s agent Pini Zahavi suggested including his client in the deal for Sane, according to German newspaper Bild.

Alaba, like Sane, is also out of contract in 2021 and neither club will want their stars to leave on free transfers next summer.

City boss Pep Guardiola worked with versatile left-back Alaba during his three-year spell with Bayern and was keen on the move, but in the end, Alaba and Zahavi turned City’s offer down.

Alaba, 27, may now opt to extend his 12-year stay at Bayern or move to Spain, where he is eager to play.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are ideal targets for him and both clubs interest the Austrian more than a switch to England.

As such, a swap deal involving Alaba now looks highly unlikely, though Bayern Munich are still set on bringing Sane to the Bundesliga after almost landing his signature last summer.

SportBILD report that Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has met with Sane’s representatives, LIAN Sports, and that a fee in the range of €80m is being discussed – though Barcelona and Real Madrid are also monitoring the situation.
