Brendan Rodgers is ‘playing a game’ over the Arsenal job and would walk out on Leicester , Charlie Adam reckons.

Rodgers is one of the leading names in the frame to succeed sacked Unai Emery as Arsenal manager – although the former Liverpool boss has repeatedly insisted he is happy at high-flying Leicester City.

However, when asked about the Arsenal hotseat on Sunday, Rodgers appeared to confirm he had a release clause in his contract with Leicester, who he has led to second in the Premier League table.

And Adam has interpreted that as confirmation that Rodgers actually wants the Gunners job.

“He’s playing a game,” said former Liverpool and Stoke City midfielder Adam.

Brendan Rodgers insists he is happy at Leicester City

“I think he wants the Arsenal job. I think he would take the Arsenal job. I think he would walk out [on Leicester].

“They will have been conversations with his representatives. For a manager to say ‘yeah I have a buy out clause’ a lot of managers have a buy out clause.

“Don’t discuss what is inside your contract. If you are not trying to throw a little bit of incitement out there, just say ‘it is personal contract issues’.

“You don’t say ‘oh yeah there is a buy out clause’. I would refuse to admit there was a buy out clause.

“Arsenal obviously know there’s a buy out clause and he’s maybe playing a game a little bit.”

Asked about his situation after Leicester’s 2-1 win over Everton on Sunday, Rodgers said: “There probably is [a clause] in most manager’s contracts. It is all hypothetical.”

But on Monday he maintained he was happy at Leicester, saying: “The message is clear and has been, probably I’ll get asked again until they appoint someone, but it’s very simple. I’m very happy here.”
