Bruno Fernandes has compared himself to former Man Utd midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron after shaving his beard into a goatee.
Veron sported a similar style of facial hair throughout his playing career, including a two-year spell at Old Trafford from 2001-03.
United forked out £28million for his services – a British transfer record at the time – but the Argentinian star never truly made his mark for the Red Devils.
He later left to join Chelsea, but proved no less of a flop in London before eventually returning to his homeland.
Yet despite Veron’s failings, Fernandes has still paid homage to the star with his latest look.
The 26-year-old took a razor to his beard amid the coronavirus lockdown but unlike other stars drew the line at shaving his head.
Fernandes told MUTV: “We’ve found the new Juan Sebastian Veron! But the hair, the hair needs to stay.”
His United teammate Diogo Dalot then mocked Fernandes’ new do, suggesting he bore resemblance to a character from Netflix crime drama Narcos.
The Portuguese playmaker has made a significantly better start to his Man Utd career than style icon Veron however.
Fernandes is already proving a hit with the fans following his £67million switch from Sporting Lisbon in January.
It took United several months for them to finally land their target, and Fernandes revealed a key factor was the input of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“For me, the most important was obviously the confidence of the coach,” Fernandes said. “I need to know I am backed from the coach, because sometimes when you change club, not every time the coach wants you.
“Not like I need to come because the coach wants me to play, no, not like this, but I want to feel the confidence from the coach: ‘You come, you are a choice for me and you come. I need you, I want you.’
“It’s not like you come and I ask, ‘But I will play?’ No, this for me is not the point. For me, the point is the confidence he has in me. If he has confidence in me, then the rest is working.”
