Carlo Ancelotti suffered an embarrassing moment in a press conference on Tuesday as he appeared to not know about a player who has been released by the club.

The Everton manager was asked about Luke Garbutt, the 27-year-old left-back who has most recently been on loan at League One side Ipswich.

Despite spending 11 years at Everton after coming through their academy Garbutt has made just 12 senior appearances for the Toffees, and has also had loan spells at the likes of Fulham, Wigan and Oxford.

The club have decided not to offer him a new deal, but when asked about this ahead of Everton’s game against Leicester on Wednesday Ancelotti seemed to not know anything about the player in question.

Carlo Ancelotti needed help from his press officer when asked the question

A journalist asked: “I wondered if you had anything to say about Luke Garbutt, who is leaving the club after being there for 11 years. Why have you decided to release him?”

After asking him to repeat the question, Ancelotti turned to his press officer appearing somewhat confused, before eventually responding: “Sorry, but I am surprised about this question. I don’t know.”

Fortunately Garbutt appeared to see the funny side of the situation, and tweeted a link to the video of Ancelotti along with four laughing face emojis.

He also released a statement which read: “Today officially my contract with Everton has now expired after been at the club for 11 years! The club has been a huge part of my life, and one I had huge pride to represent. There’s been many ups and a few downs which I couldn’t control. Everton good luck for the future.”

It remains to be seen where Garbutt heads next, but he has been an important part of the Ipswich first team this season, making 30 appearances in all competitions and scoring six goals.
