Gareth Southgate has set his sights on a luxury spa hotel near St Petersburg as England’s World Cup venue.

England boss Southgate and FA chiefs have identified ForRestMix Club which is 45 minutes outside the city as their favoured venue.

Southgate was keen to avoid Moscow because of the heavy traffic and it would be difficult for the squad to move around.

They have been keen on St Petersburg as a base and this venue offers spa, a luxury hotel and stunning grounds.

Gareth Southgate has said WAGs would be welcome in Russia, when England qualify

Southgate’s side need a point from this week’s double-header against Slovenia and Lithuania, starting Thursday at Wembley, to confirm their place in the tournament.

But plans are in their advanced stage for when their campaign inevitably kicks off in June.

The facility England have their eye on is found in a cluster of deluxe hotels and should have plenty to occupy the England stars’ WAGs, who Southgate said he would welcome to the camp.

User-generated review site TripAdvisor gives the hotel an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars with more than half of those giving a score calling it excellent, the highest classification.

The 107-room hotel itself targets guests looking for “active rest, relaxing procedures” and to “pamper themselves with good food” at one of several restaurants.

For the players, a swimming pool for recovery sessions, and weights and cardio gear is already in place, along with spaces the hotel say are for martial arts, aerobic classes and yoga.

The ‘spa club’ also offers massages, a beauty studio and a medical cosmetology department, which they call a magnet for post-plastic surgery treatment.

This week Southgate said wives and girlfriends were worth the risk of potential trouble with previous camps including star other halves such as Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole and Coleen Rooney.

Southgate said: “I will absolutely encourage the families to come to Russia so that the lads can see them the day after a game.

“I don’t think there’s ever been a tournament where every player’s entire family has been in with us the whole time.

“But for some players it will be really important to have them there.”

“Sadly, for my family, I am always so focused that I don’t want to be distracted.

“But for some players that can be hugely important and everyone is different as an individual.

“We want that environment where the players are relaxed. Sometimes it can become a bubble where there’s nothing else in your life.”
