Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has admitted that he would love to see his ex-teammate Neymar back at the Nou Camp next season.
The controversial forward is said to have his heart set on a move back to the Catalan club having struggled with injuries and off-the-field issues during his two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain.
Neymar became the world’s most expensive player when he joined the French club from Barcelona for a fee of around £198m in 2017, but has never fully settled at the club.
Speaking in Miami, where Barcelona are due to take on Napoli in a pre-season match on Wednesday, Pique said: “He (Neymar) is a great player who knows the dressing room, the city, and the club. It’s a complicated transaction and it must be he who decides.”
To add further intrigue to the transfer saga, Pique’s quotes were posted on Twitter by the official Barcelona account , leading some to suggest the club themself are also keen for the deal to be done.
There are question marks, however, about how Barcelona would be able to afford Neymar having already spent over £200m this summer on acquiring the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Frenkie de Jong , Neto and Junior Firpo.
Meanwhile Pique also appeared to suggest Philippe Coutinho wants to leave the club amid interest from Tottenham .
When asked about the ex-Liverpool midfielder Pique said: “I want him (Coutinho) to stay, but at the end of the day it’s what he wants and I want him to be happy.
“Let’s see. Until the last day of the transfer market we will not know if he stays or not. But it’s not my decision, it’s the club’s and Philippe’s.”
Barcelona play Napoli twice in the USA, the second time in Michigan on Saturday, before beginning their La Liga campaign against Athletic Bilbao on Friday 16 August.
