Jamie Carragher makes Premier League title prediction after fine Liverpool start

Jamie Carragher has predicted Liverpool will again match Manchester City in the Premier League title race – but says the champions are still favourites for the crown.

Liverpool currently top the Premier League having won all four of their games so far, while last season’s treble-winners City are second just two points.

Many feel Liverpool’s incredible Champions League triumph will give Jurgen Klopp’s side the impetus to finally end their 30-wait for the top-flight title this season.

They came close to ending their drought last term, but were edged out by just a point as City triumphed in one of the most intense title races of all time.

Liverpool great Carragher says City are still the Premier League’s best team – although he says if anyone can pip them to the title it is his former side.

Carragher played for the Premier League All Stars team in Wednesday night’s testimonial for former City skipper Vincent Kompany at the Etihad.

Asked afterwards about the title race, he said: “I think it’s a bit early yet. I think we’ve got to probably wait until Christmas.

“I do feel around about Christmas time Liverpool and City will have a substantial gap and it looks like there’s a little bit of a gap at this moment.

“But I still think City are favourites and are the best team in the Premier League at this moment because they won the Premier League and they proved that last season.

“So, I think it’s still on Liverpool to overtake City but they’re more than capable.”

Liverpool host Newcastle at lunchtime on Saturday as the Premier League returns following the international break, while City are away to Norwich in the evening as they play catch-up to their rivals.

Nearest challengers Leicester City , who are two points behind City in third place, are away to Manchester United .
