England target ‘luxury’ beauty spa hotel near St Petersburg for Russia 2018 base – where WAGs will be welcome

Gareth Southgate has set his sights on a luxury spa hotel near St Petersburg as England’s World Cup venue.

England boss Southgate and FA chiefs have identified ForRestMix Club which is 45 minutes outside the city as their favoured venue.

Southgate was keen to avoid Moscow because of the heavy traffic and it would be difficult for the squad to move around.

They have been keen on St Petersburg as a base and this venue offers spa, a luxury hotel and stunning grounds.

Gareth Southgate has said WAGs would be welcome in Russia, when England qualify

Southgate’s side need a point from this week’s double-header against Slovenia and Lithuania, starting Thursday at Wembley, to confirm their place in the tournament.

But plans are in their advanced stage for when their campaign inevitably kicks off in June.

The facility England have their eye on is found in a cluster of deluxe hotels and should have plenty to occupy the England stars’ WAGs, who Southgate said he would welcome to the camp.

User-generated review site TripAdvisor gives the hotel an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars with more than half of those giving a score calling it excellent, the highest classification.

The 107-room hotel itself targets guests looking for “active rest, relaxing procedures” and to “pamper themselves with good food” at one of several restaurants.

For the players, a swimming pool for recovery sessions, and weights and cardio gear is already in place, along with spaces the hotel say are for martial arts, aerobic classes and yoga.

The ‘spa club’ also offers massages, a beauty studio and a medical cosmetology department, which they call a magnet for post-plastic surgery treatment.

This week Southgate said wives and girlfriends were worth the risk of potential trouble with previous camps including star other halves such as Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole and Coleen Rooney.

Southgate said: “I will absolutely encourage the families to come to Russia so that the lads can see them the day after a game.

“I don’t think there’s ever been a tournament where every player’s entire family has been in with us the whole time.

“But for some players it will be really important to have them there.”

“Sadly, for my family, I am always so focused that I don’t want to be distracted.

“But for some players that can be hugely important and everyone is different as an individual.

“We want that environment where the players are relaxed. Sometimes it can become a bubble where there’s nothing else in your life.”

FCC approves up to $77 million to restore communications after hurricane

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday approved up to $77 million to fund repairs of communication networks and restore services in storm-lashed Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

As of Tuesday, almost two weeks after Hurricane Maria walloped Puerto Rico, knocking out its electric grid – nearly 90 percent of cell phone sites on the island remained out of service. Almost 70 percent of cell towers remained out in the U.S. Virgin Islands, with little progress made over the last week.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai had proposed on Tuesday tapping the U.S. government’s Universal Service Fund “to expedite repair and restoration efforts.”

The fund provides federal subsidies to companies to make communications services more accessible and affordable in places where the cost is high.

The five-member FCC unanimously approved “up to seven months of their normal federal support in advance – right now, in a lump sum – to help them repair their networks and restore service to consumers,” Pai said.

In a statement on Tuesday, network provider AT&T Inc praised the FCC efforts at rebuilding communications infrastructure.

The company will “closely assess the details of the chairman’s proposal as we continue with the recovery and restoration of our network and facilities,” it said.

Wireless companies have been setting up temporary cell sites and bringing in equipment but still face hurdles with widespread power outages.

Much of the landline network was also badly damaged.

Man Utd news: Chelsea wrong to sell Matic – he’s been a revelation under Mourinho

Ex-Chelsea coach names the player who has been a ‘revelation’ under Jose Mourinho

Ray Wilkins says Chelsea made a huge mistake selling Nemanja Matic to Manchester United and that the Serbian midfielder has been a ‘revelation’ at Old Trafford.

Helping the Blues win two titles in three years, Matic was an influential and popular figure at Stamford Bridge but was surprisingly allowed to join United in July.

Chelsea title-winner opens door to stunning Stamford Bridge return

The 29-year-old took little time to adapt to his new surroundings and has put in a string of assured performances this season to help United go through August and September unbeaten.

Wilkins insists he has ‘no idea’ why Chelsea sanctioned his departure and says Matic has allowed his new teammates to come into their own.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Blues coach said: ‘Why did Chelsea sell him at £40million?

‘I’ve no idea, I really hate no idea whatsoever. This guy has been an absolute revelation at Manchester United.

‘He’s allowing everybody to do their jobs and do their jobs a lot better. His stature is at six-foot four and he just allows people to do their job.’

Wilkins, who was Chelsea’s assistant manager as recent as 2010, added: ‘As far as I’m concerned we should never have allowed him to leave.

‘You’ve now got a Michael Carrick with legs. Michael I still think can come in and do a job for Manchester United and he probably will do as the season progresses.

‘But Matic, Mourinho could not have got a better player to sit in front of that back four.’

Secondary school CCTV camera capture terrifying ‘ghost’ causing havoc in corridors in the dead of the night

A CCTV camera installed at a secondary school appears to have caught a ghost causing havoc in the corridors late at night.

Deerpark CBS in Cork, in the Republic of Ireland, released that footage which they reckon shows a lot of spooky goings-on.

The footage begins with a huge bang and some strange flashes, that seem to be coming from behind a close door.

Moments later, lockers begin to shake uncontrollably, reports the Irish Mirror .

The whole time, there is no indication that anyone has walked in or out of the corridor.

The CCTV camera caught some spooky goings on

Lockers started shaking after a loud bang and a strange flash

And things get really weird when a locker door flies open by itself, spilling books and papers onto the floor.

Just for good measure, at the end of the footage, the wet floor sign that has been placed outside the toilets is knocked over.

The footage appears to have been captured just after 3am on October 1, a Sunday morning when the school would have been closed for the weekend.

The ‘ghost’ flings open a locker and knocks papers onto the floor

A wet floor sign is toppled over – seemingly on its own

Posting on their Facebook page, Deerpark CBS said: “Anyone have the number for ghostbusters?”

They also said on Youtube: “Prank or poltergeist? CCTV footage from Deerpark CBS, the oldest (and most haunted!!!!?) school on the south side of Cork City.”

Whether or not it is actually a poltergeist or a prank by students is anyone’s guess.

They added: “We’re such a great school even the afterlife are signing up lol.”

Las Vegas shooter's girlfriend questioned as Trump visits scene

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) – The FBI on Wednesday questioned the girlfriend of the gunman who slaughtered 58 concertgoers in Las Vegas, hoping to discover what motivated Stephen Paddock to open fire on a country music festival in the deadliest mass shooting in recent U.S. history.

Marilou Danley, who returned to the United States late Tuesday, is a “person of interest” in the investigation, Las Vegas police have said. Her relatives in the Philippines told reporters she had a “clean conscience” and no prior knowledge of the attack.More than 500 people were injured, some trampled in the pandemonium, when Paddock, 64, fired bullets from his 32nd-floor hotel room for about 10 minutes on Sunday night. He killed himself before police stormed his room, where they found as many as 23 guns, bringing the total death toll to 59.

Twelve of his rifles were fitted with so-called bump stocks, officials said, allowing the guns to be fired almost as though they were automatic weapons.

U.S. President Donald Trump visited Las Vegas on Wednesday to pay his respects and support first responders, marking the first time he has had to deal as president with a major mass shooting of the type that have killed hundreds of people in recent years in the United States.

Investigators have focused on Paddock’s girlfriend Danley, 62, who once lived with Paddock and left the United States for the Philippines in September.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation met her plane from Manila at Los Angeles International Airport and took her away for questioning, said two U.S. officials briefed on the case.

As of midday Wednesday, there was no indication she was aware of Paddock’s plans, the officials said.

They were questioning her about his weapons purchases, a $100,000 wire transfer to a Philippine bank that they think may have been intended for her, and about whether she saw any changes in his behavior before she left the United States.

“Assuming she had no role in his actions, the most important thing is any light she can shed on Paddock’s motive,” said the official, who spoke about the continuing investigation only on condition of anonymity.

Danley, who has retained Los Angeles-area defense lawyer Matthew Lombard, had assured her family she has a “clean conscience,” her brother told ABC News in the Philippines.

“I called her up immediately and she said, ‘Relax, we shouldn’t worry about it. I’ll fix it. Do not panic. I have a clean conscience,’” Reynaldo Bustos told ABC in Manila.

Paddock’s brother Eric told reporters the $100,000 transfer was evidence that “Steve took care of the people he loved,” and that he likely wanted to protect Danley by sending her overseas before the attack.

“He manipulated her to be completely as far away from this and safe when he did this,” Eric Paddock said on Tuesday.

She arrived in Manila on Sept. 15, flew to Hong Kong on Sept. 22 and returned to Manila on Sept. 25. She was there until she flew to Los Angeles on Tuesday night, according to a Philippine immigration official.

While Danley has not been arrested nor identified as a suspect, one expert noted that that was also the case for the wife of the shooter who killed 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando last year, previously the deadliest shooting spree in modern U.S. history. Pulse shooter Omar Mateen was killed in a shootout with police.

Mateen’s wife, Noor Salman, cooperated with investigators but was later indicted for aiding and abetting her late husband in support of the Islamic State. Salman has pleaded not guilty.

“She cooperated her way right into a criminal indictment,” said Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos.

However, Geragos said, “Mere presence is not necessarily something that’s going to get you indicted in most jurisdictions.”

Or, as New York attorney Paul Shechtman noted, “Sadly, in America it’s not a crime to know that your boyfriend has an arsenal of assault weapons.”

Trump, touring a hospital in Las Vegas, told reporters Paddock was “very demented” but that investigators still had not nailed down a motive for the shooting.

“We struggle to explain to our children how such evil can exist,” he said later at Las Vegas police command center.

Meeting with law enforcement officers who rushed toward the shooter, Trump asked the head of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department if investigators were any closer to establishing a motive.

“We’ve had a couple good leads and we’re working our way through it,” Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told the president.

Indians face great expectations, Cubs seek repeat

(Reuters) – The Cleveland Indians are done marveling at their record-setting season, focused instead on avenging their dramatic extra innings Game Seven loss in last year’s World Series and snapping Major League Baseball’s longest title drought.

There are big expectations on Cleveland in a post-season where the Chicago Cubs will chase a second consecutive World Series and the Washington Nationals look to finally win a division series.

The Indians, who were beaten by the Cubs in last year’s World Series, are favored to celebrate their first championship since 1948.

Cleveland open their best-of-five games American League Division Series on Thursday against big-hitting rookie Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees

“It’s time to get to work,” Indians pitcher Josh Tomlin said. “Everybody is looking forward to that. This is when the fun begins.”

The Indians have all the tools necessary to make another deep post-season run given a lineup featuring plenty of power from the likes of Jose Ramirez and Edwin Encarnacion, a shutdown rotation and bullpen that can make quick work of most teams.

Cleveland used a torrid second half of the season, which included an AL-record 22 consecutive victories between August and September, to finish two wins short of the National League’s Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the majors.

“For whatever reason, it took us a while to get — whether it’s your rhythm, whether it’s your footing,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “But once they did, it’s like they never took their foot off the gas.”

As a result, the Indians are brimming with confidence and should they eliminate the Yankees will face either the AL East champion Boston Red Sox or a Houston Astros team that won the AL West by a 21-game margin.

The Astros had the AL’s best record on Aug. 31 when they added Justin Verlander to a rotation that already featured fellow Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel.

The addition of Verlander, who has been brilliant since joining his new club, tilts the series in the Astros favor but they face a Boston rotation anchored by Chris Sale in the best-of-five series.

DODGERS CONCERN

The Los Angeles Dodgers finished with the best record in the majors but a recent 11-game skid has raised some concern about whether the National League West champions can make a run.

The Dodgers will face the winner of Wednesday’s NL Wild Card showdown between the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks in a best-of-five series starting on Friday in Los Angeles.

The Cubs will face the Nationals in what looks to be a competitive series.

Washington have never advanced beyond a division series but the return of right fielder Bryce Harper from a knee injury along with improved play from the bullpen make them a legitimate threat.

The Nationals’ two-headed pitching monster of Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg could trouble the Cubs hitters as long as the former shows no ill effects from a tweaked hamstring he suffered last Saturday.

But the Cubs, who last year snapped a 108-year title drought, have gained plenty of playoff experience over the last two seasons, have a deep lineup and need no motivation.

“There’s nothing I can say that’s going to be stirring, motivational, substantive in a sense that it’s going to change their minds about anything,” said Cubs manager Joe Maddon.

”I just want our guys to go out and do what they’ve been doing since the All-Star break. No different.

“Go out and play. Play unencumbered. Go out and play mentally freely and play the game we’ve learned to play over the last couple years.”

Struggling to learn a new language – these porn stars could help (no, really, they could)

People hoping to learn a new language can now sign up to a bizarre series of classes – taught by porn stars.

Two month courses, teaching people French, Japanese, Spanish and English have been launched online.

As well as the usual skills of learning how to chat, write and the right pronunciation, the classes come with a little something extra.

They are all taught by native-speaking porn stars, who will also provide insights into etiquette and body language (seriously).

The classes are being launched by CamSoda and they promise to teach people to speak “sensually” as well as correctly.

The porn stars will be teaching a foreign language

Each ‘teacher’ is a native-speaker

They will offer video courses

A spokesman for the company said: “Whether it be sensual conversation or quick vocabulary quiz, our private tutors are flexible and amenable to teaching users in a manner that works best for them.”

Each of the model teachers will be dressed in outfits commonly associated with the country of the language they are teaching.

As well as video lessons, people will also be able to contact their private tutors by text.

Although, if you’re a nervous student, this may not be the course for you.

Las Vegas probe turns to shooter's girlfriend as Trump visits scene

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) – The girlfriend of the gunman who slaughtered 58 concertgoers in Las Vegas was expected to be questioned on Wednesday over the mass shooting at a music festival that has baffled investigators probing the killer’s motive.

Las Vegas police have called Marilou Danley, who returned to the United States late Tuesday, a “person of interest.” Her relatives in the Philippines told news media she had a “clean conscience” and no prior knowledge of the attack, the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.More than 500 people were injured, some trampled in the pandemonium, when Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire on an outdoor country music festival for about 10 minutes on Sunday night. He killed himself before police stormed his room on the 32nd-floor of the hotel, where they found as many as 23 guns.

Twelve of his rifles were fitted with bump-stock devices, officials said, allowing the guns to be fired almost as though they were automatic weapons.

U.S. President Donald Trump landed in Las Vegas on Wednesday to pay respects to the dead and support first responders, marking the first time he has had to deal as president with a major mass shooting of the type that have killed hundreds of people in recent years in the United States.

Trump, who has called the massacre “an act of pure evil,” said unanswered questions surrounding the investigation would be revealed “at the appropriate time.”

Investigators have focused on Paddock’s girlfriend Danley, 62, who arrived in Los Angles from her native Philippines on Tuesday night. A U.S. official said Danley was not under arrest but that the Federal Bureau of Investigation hoped she would consent to be interviewed voluntarily.

Danley had assured her family she has a “clean conscience” following Sunday night’s rampage, her brother told ABC News in the Philippines.

“I called her up immediately and she said, ‘Relax, we shouldn’t worry about it. I’ll fix it. Do not panic. I have a clean conscience,’” Reynaldo Bustos told ABC in Manila.

Investigators were examining a $100,000 wire transfer Paddock sent to an account in the Philippines that “appears to have been intended” for Danley, a senior U.S. homeland security official said on Tuesday.

Paddock’s brother Eric told reporters the money transfer was evidence that “Steve took care of the people he loved” and that he likely wanted to protect Danley by sending her overseas ahead of the attack.

“He manipulated her to be completely as far away from this and safe when he did this,” Eric Paddock said on Tuesday.

Marilou Danle. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department/via REUTERS

She arrived in Manila on Sept. 15, flew to Hong Kong on Sept. 22 and returned to Manila on Sept. 25. She was there until she flew to Los Angeles on Tuesday night, according to a Philippine immigration official.

Paddock had no criminal record, no known history of mental illness and no outward signs of social disaffection, political discontent or extremist ideology, police said.

“We are not there yet,” FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe said on Wednesday, speaking at the Cambridge Cyber Summit in Boston. “We have a lot to do.”

However, Paddock appeared to be “descending into madness” in the months before the shooting, ABC News reported on Wednesday, citing an unnamed person briefed on the investigation.

Paddock had significant weight loss, an increasingly slovenly appearance and was obsessed with his girlfriend’s former husband, ABC said.

In June he was prescribed the anti-anxiety drug diazepam, commonly known as Valium, which can lead to aggressive behavior, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported, citing records from the Nevada Prescription Monitoring Program.

Reuters was not able immediately to confirm the two reports.

“He was a private guy,” Eric Paddock said of his brother. “That’s why you can’t find out anything about him. Is he such a weirdo because he didn’t have a Facebook account and post 50,000 pictures of himself every day?”

Paddock’s case is extremely rare if not unique in that he left behind no clues to his motives, said Craig Jackson, a psychology professor at Birmingham City University in Britain who has studied spree killers for the past 10 years.

“We usually find something there in the background where they see themselves to be the victims. No one has listened to them and they feel this is the last recourse,” Jackson said, adding that spree killers typically leave behind a manifesto or video diary.

“If there is something, I think we would have found it by now,” Jackson said.

Edwin van der Sar reveals the secret that made Cristiano Ronaldo become a better player than Wayne Rooney

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has revealed the lengths that Cristiano Ronaldo would go to to become the very best when he was at Old Trafford.

And they included the Dutchman making some sacrifices of his own.

Speaking in the November issue of FourFourTwo magazine, the former United stopper was asked why it was Ronaldo and not fellow teammate Wayne Rooney who kicked on to become the player that we know today, when both were considered to be at a similar level when they were younger.

And the 46-year-old – who won four Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League with the club – gave a fairly detailed answer.

“They both worked incredibly hard on the pitch, but Cristiano took it up a level,” he said.

“Off the field, Ronaldo was also focusing on everything extensively, such as resting up properly and strengthening his body.

“After training sessions he would often work on his free-kicks and then come to me and say: “Edwin, can you go in goal?”

It was Ronaldo’s extra effort on the training ground that made him so special

“I’d say I was old so he would be better off using one of the youth-team keepers, but he would insist I went in goal as he wanted to score past me.

“I would tease him a lot and say things like: “You won’t score against me, Ronnie, you know it. Ask the reserve goalie, that’s better for your confidence.

“He’d get agitated and reply: “No, no. You’ve got to go in goal!”

Van der Sar was determined to help Ronaldo in his career

Van der Sar would seemingly oblige, allowing Ronaldo to hone his technique against one of the best goalkeepers Europe has seen this century.

And his respect for the Portuguese is still evident.

“Cristiano is a really good guy, however” Van der Sar added. “And the common perception of him is not a true reflection of his personality.”
