Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola played down the impact of their shock defeat at Norwich – by taking a shot at title rivals Liverpool .

City were stunned by the newly promoted Canaries at Carrow Road, leaving them five points adrift of the table-topping Reds, who beat Newcastle to continue their perfect start to the season.

Guardiola insisted it is too early in the season to consider the result pivotal to their hopes of winning a third straight Premier League title.

He instead claimed that it is far too early to consider congratulating Liverpool on winning the title already, knowing plenty more twists and turns lie ahead.

“Five points (behind Liverpool) is five points – but we are in September,” Guardiola said.

“What are we supposed to do? Say ‘it’s September and congratulations to Liverpool, you are champions?’

“Not for one second am I going to doubt my players.”

Defensive mistakes were the theme on a tough night for City at Norwich – but Guardiola refused to criticise his players for their below-par showing.

“Nico (Otamendi) doesn’t know someone is coming and nobody tells him,” he said. “Sometimes you know we make mistakes. I think sometimes we forget these guys are human.

“Football is quick, things can go wrong and I must see what I can do to help them.”

City veteran David Silva warned his side this week that past success counts for nothing in their title quest.

“It’s difficult to win it again,” said Silva.

“Mentally, you need to be very strong, turn the page every season, forget about what you’ve done and focus on the new challenges and ambitions of the new season.

“Winning again this season will depend on how the season goes, the way we win it, but I guess the feeling would be very similar to the previous ones.

“It’s very difficult, obviously, because all of the teams have strengthened their squads.

“Every season is more and more difficult. That’s why what we did last season was something incredible and historic.”
